1. Looking east with Delaware River and developing waterfront just behind
camera.
2. Reverse view from same camera position as above.
3. Same direction as picture #1 ( top picture) 100 ft. eastward.
4. Camden County Jail, smack dab in the middle of Mickle Blvd. between
waterfront and transportation center. A narrow 3rd Street style promenade would
hide the jail ( an absolute necessity if the street is to be developed and
Camden's image enhanced.) There will still be enough land left behind the Promenade
buildings for access lanes to jail and to meet fire codes on each side.
Developing Mickle Blvd. into a Promenade between Broadway and the Waterfront
could jump-start Urban renewal quicker than any other plan on the drawing board.
There are few residential or commercial properties in the way, with ample land
on each side. Mickle Blvd. would be the pleasant, walkable street Camden
desperately needs from the Broadway Hi-Speed Line to alleviate traffic
congestion to special Waterfront events. Atlantic City style jitney's could
serve those that would rather ride.
It would also hide, and eventually alleviate the need for the ugly, space
wasting parking lots that consume so much space in the heart of the
redevelopment zone. ( The cities of the future look to eliminate cars from
coming into their downtowns, not accommodate them.)
5. Looking east, away from Delaware river, 3 blocks from waterfront. Walter Rand
Transportation Center on Broadway in distant middle of picture. Walt Whitman's
house on the right. County Jail is to the left ( out of frame.)
6. Looking at western end of Mickle Blvd. ( Waterfront.)
7. Western terminus of Mickle Blvd., looking at downtown Philadelphia.
9. Western terminus, different angle.
9. Marina next to western Mickle. Blvd. terminus.
10. Public concert stage and ferry to Philadelphia's Historic district, opposite
shore.
11. The walkway ( looking north) connecting Mickle Blvd. waterfront terminus.
Walkway fronts Camden's existing waterfront attractions.
12. Philadelphia historic district in background. Connected to Camden by ferry,
soon to be completed Skytram and a clean modern subway, only one stop away.
