January 27, 2007 Royal Visit to Philadelphia

New Urbanist Prince Charles and wife, the duchess of Cornwall, will be visiting area Jan. 27.   The themes of the two-day visit to the United States are youth development, urban regeneration and environmental conservation."The prince is very interested in regeneration, a term that means neighborhood transformation." Gov. Corzine should invite the duchess and the New Urbanist Prince Charles for a quick jaunt around Camden. "Regeneration" is not just a slight interest or hobby of the Prince's. It is a sincere and deep intellectual commitment that occupies much of his time. Camden represents the type of challenge that the Prince is most interested in, and likely would be grateful for the opportunity to mentally engage and share his thoughts and impressions of America's greatest Regeneration challenge. It is all the more timely, since The Congress For The New Urbanism, an organization Prince Charles is closely associated with, is holding its annual Congress in Philadelphia for the first time this year, and Camden's Regeneration is on its agenda.  All it would take is a quick loop across the river and back, less than 45 minutes, for the Prince to see all he needs to see.Title It would be a memory the people of Camden would cherish for generations.

The first official chance to catch a glimpse of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will be about 11:15 a.m.  when they arrive in their motorcade in the 500 block of Walnut Street.

From there they will walk to Independence Hall to be welcomed by Gov. Rendell, Mayor Street, and National Park Service officials.

January 25, 2007 As Prince Charles visits, his village reveals his mix of passions Inga Saffron Inquirer Architecture Critic
He is at once a passionate urban reformer, a crusading environmentalist, and a conservative guardian of what he perceives to be England's essential Englishness. When he raises the issue of urban regeneration this weekend in Philadelphia, he is likely to hold Poundbury up as an appealing alternative for sprawl-dependent Americans.
