The Heart of Camden (housing
rehabilitation nonprofit) Father Michael Doyle (b 1934- ) was born in County Longford, Ireland. He became a Roman Catholic priest in 1959 after attending St. Peter's Seminary. He became an assistant parish pastor in Camden, NJ, in 1959 and served as a schoolteacher. In 1971, Father Doyle protested the Vietnam War, was arrested with a group that was called the "Camden 28," and won his own acquittal in 1973. The next year, Father Doyle became pastor of his own parish, Sacred Heart. Some of his community activities have included a non-profit home renovation program to house low-income families and a free clinic for Camden residents. Father Doyle has written both prose and poetry about his Irish roots and about Camden and its needs. Camden is a casualty of the progress of the United States. Left behind. Out of tune. Its weak voice needs amplification, amplification of its cry. Where is that "love"? Where is the "the vital energy"? If its sorrow.... Heart of Camden Housing is a non-profit Community Development Corporation serving Historic Waterfront South, Camden, New Jersey. Our mission is to restore the dignity and quality of life of the community through programs for housing restoration, economic expansion and human development.
