Declines posted in all categories By TOM LOUNSBERRY and TERESA SICARD ARCHAMBEAULT Overall crime in the eight categories included in the state's most serious criminal offense list is down 25 percent in the city for the first four months of the year compared to the same period in 2004. Declines were reported in all categories - murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, auto theft and arson. Crime continued to drop in May in the same categories, but the figures have not been certified by the State Police Uniform Crime Reporting Unit. The report shows murders down by 21 percent, from 14 to 11; robberies down by 27 percent, from 249 to 181; burglaries and auto thefts were each down by 26 percent and arsons decreased 30 percent, from 61 to 38. Rapes also decreased by 21 percent, from 19 to 15. Camden County Prosecutor Vincent P. Sarubbi said these statistics are commonly used in media reports and academic studies to gauge a community's safety. |
